For those of you looking for a good long quality ride, veloDCity presents via the Washington Old Dominion Trail, a perfect fix: the 'Purcellville Run' with the always popular and back breaking 'Reston detour'. For the uninitiated, the WOD Trail is a long and nearly flat multi-use path that is popular with many cyclists. The 'Reston Detour' on the other hand, is an eleven mile alternate route that covers the Reston Century's nearly most brutal climb that goes to Purcellville, VA. Click the link below to view the route along with the topographic information.

The ride will begin/finish at the Dunn Loring metro station(orange line) with a break or two in between. Lunch will be held at Magnolias Restaurant in Purcellville.

Distance: 72 total miles, 36 miles in one direction

Looking for a shorter distance?
Ride towards Ashburn, VA or Leesburg, VA and return to Dunn Loring Station or consult this online distance calculator to determine your our own turnaround point.

There's been a change in plans due to the weather forecast of afternoon thunderstorms and heavy rains. The ride has been shortened and will now head out to Ashburn, VA to avoid the inclement weather. In essence, the Purcellville Run will now be the Ashburn Run. Same start time and location as originally scheduled.

I am going to start and finish in Reston. I will ride down and meet you at the DL station or along the way. Should be a great ride.

The bone wasn't healing right so I had to go get the operation today. outdoor biking is out for at least two more weeks. I very keenly regret not being able to join you.

Today's (June 11th) Washington Post Metro section had an article about the Loudoun County Sheriff's deputies ticketing eight cyclists in the Lovettsville and Purcellville area over the weekend. Many of the cyclists were riders on the MS150. The article says the tickets were for not coming to complete stops at stop signs and were the result of complaints from motorists.

Hey Chip - Thanks for the suggestion. I also have a preference to that particular route because 1)it's visually more interesting and 2) more faster than the trail due to the fact that you're riding down a slight hill. So in other words, if anybody is interested taking the detour; they can. Hey Chris - I'll post the Reston Detour route information shortly but it's nearly identical to the Reston Century route and Chip's detour suggestion.

Chip, I prefer coming back that way as well if anyone else is interested. The W&OD on part of that descent gets narrow towards the bottom with six to twelve inch drop off on the sides.

Good ride. Do you think we can run a break off group to ride the road from Clark's Gap back to Leesburg? The alternate route is a great ride when returning from Purcellville. http://maps.google.com/maps...

OK Gregg, I did not do your Reston Detour last year. More details please! If anyone wants to join me, I'm going to do the compete W&OD by riding to the start in Shirlington then out to join the group in Dunn Loring. Hope to get a full 100 miles in.

When you RSVP, could you please indicate your planned destination(Purcellville, Leesburg, etc) and if you plan to ride the uber masochistic 'Reston Detour'.

Wayne - The WOD Trail is mostly a flat route with nothing to worry about. However if you need some hills then you definitely want to ride the 'Reston Detour' option.

I'm looking forward to this. I haven't done the WOD trail before, except close in to DC. Is it flat or lots of hills?

    •  This was a good ride for me. Lots of rain. I like giving my skills a test while the rain makes it impossible to see. Sorry I missed the ribs. : -)
    •  We kept extending where we were going to turn around, but eventually stopped and headed back at Leesburg. Good BBQ on the way back in at Ashburn.
    •  Great rain ride,,, something I've always wanted to practice
    •  Awesome ride, i was the slowest one but gregg and the gang took real good care of me .
