Hi,

Could someone recommend a shop I could bring my bike to so I can get my new bike fitted and maybe have the head (?) adjusted? I got a cross bike and people have been a bit unsure of how to help me because it's not a road bike or a mountain bike. Preferably the shop would be in NE DC....

Thanks,
Brigitte

Closest "local bike shop" (LBS) as opposed to one of the chains is The Bicycle Place on Grub Road. I've never gone there though so can't vouch for the service. A little further away is College Park Bicycles right down by the U of MD campus. Good service, lousy parking.

Brigitte,

A cyclo-cross bike is a road bike with stronger wheels. The headset is the same, indeed all headsets do the same thing: attach the front fork to the frame and handlebars. I always have good luck when I go to City Bikes on Connecticut at the Capital Crescent Trail.

You can actually adjust the headset yourself with an Allen wrench or two: loosen the allen bolts on the stem, tighten the bolt at the top of the fork (the one you look straight down on when you're riding the bike with your head down), keeping the handlebars aligned, tighten the stem bolts again.

Cheers,

Stephen.

Hi-

I know this is a bit out of your way, but I really like Spokes in Vienna. Conte's always gets good reviews-although it can be pricey. Just stay away from the City Bikes in Adams Morgan.

Hi Brigitte,

I can't think of any shops specifically in NE Washington but I can recommend the following LBS for what you need. They all offer great service but more importantly also provide a good fit service as well.

1) The Bike Rack DC
1412 Q St NW
Washington DC 20009
202 387-2453
Ask for the shop owner, Chuck about bike fittings.

2) Capitol Hill Bikes
709 8th St SE
Washington, DC 20003

3) City Bikes
2501 Champlain St, NW
Washington, DC 20009

Hi Brigitte,
Capitol Hill Bikes, which Gregg mentioned, is very close to NE on Capitol Hill, and I've had good service with them. I also have had good service a couple times at the REI store in College Park, not far from NE. It's a general outdoor store, but they have a dedicated bike repair shop with very competent mechanics, in my experience.
