Because I ran a marathon on Sunday and will be doing this 10K next Sunday thus cannot do a long run on Saturday, there will be a SLOW ride as well as a long run. For the long ride, we will ride to Versailles and beyond. If you want, you can easily take the RER back to Paris from Versailles.

As usual, we will be meeting at the Grande Cascade but at 9:30. Please be there at 9:15 as we will be leaving promptly at 9:30.

With summer drifting into fall and winter quickly upon us, many of us have given up on doing anything outside. For some of us, this means that we have completed another successful triathlon/marathon/biking season. For others, it is another year where we didn’t get back into shape or didn’t do that event we have always wanted to do. However, all is not lost as there are many of us, expaTRIés, who are already thinking about next year.

ExpaTRIés is Paris-based but English speaking triathlon club. We have members from the US, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and even France. (We can’t discriminate.) Some of our members will be training for their 7th Ironman while others will be preparing for their first 10K.

No matter the event or level, expaTRIés can help you prepare for it. All are welcome in our club. We have beginner rides and swims as well as long, fast rides. Along the way, you will meet some fun people. (We may be training but we don’t take ourselves that seriously. After all, we are having this meeting in a bar.)

So if you have questions about the club or interested in doing your first event, do join us and we will be happy to answer any and all your questions about triathlons, marathons, cycle sportifs, etc.

On Sunday, we are going to have a beginner ride to Versailles and beyond. The pace will be moderate with breaks. Once we reach Versailles, it is possible to take the RER back to Paris, continue for a longer ride or ride back to Paris (the way back is rather simple).

As usual, we will be meeting by the phone booth in the parking lot of the Grande Cascade restaurant at 8:45 for a 9 departure.

If you have any questions, please email me offline. And, if you don't know what "expaTRIés" means or interested in triathlons, check out our website www.expatries-triathlon.com or sign up for the Yahoo group at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/expaTRIesTriathlon.

On Tuesday, we will be having our weekly coached swim session in Piscine Pasteur in Neuilly which is on boulevard d'Inkermann. It will start around 7:15 AM. (Yes, in the morning.) As the pool closes at 8:30, it won't last much more than an hour. At the moment, we don't have a reserved lane (Bob is working on that) but should be able to control one lane as the pool usually isn't crowded. We will be in the one of the two closest lanes to the wall. These are not swim/fitness workouts although we will swim well over a KM; they are to help us improve our technique so we will be more efficient and faster swimmers.

Although it is only 25 meters, it is a very nice pool. If you plan on doing this on a regular basis, instead of buying a single admission, I would strongly suggest buying a 20 hour card.

Furthermore, it would be great if you can bring a pull-buoy and fins but they are not necessary unless you plan on making this a habit.
They do have a bike rack outside to lock up your bike. Because of the high school next door there are Neuilly teenagers waiting thus it appears to be a very safe place. I have locked my bike every time and haven't had a problem but others have.

To clarify, I do realize that this is a Meetup for biking but since biking is one discipline of triathlon, many members already do triathlons and it is good to have activity on the site as activity begets activity, I am posting it here as well so please excuse the email if you aren't interested. And, believe it or not, every week I do get some new interest so others are interested. Otherwise, see you at the next race.

The event all of us have been eagerly waiting for: The Paris Olympic Distance Triathlon. At this point, we don’t know the final details of the course except the swim will be in the Seine. We hear that they are trying to make the bike and run more scenic like London instead of laps of Bois de Boulogne and the Hippodrome. Regardless, it will be fun especially for the club members as it is our short-distance championship. (For 2009, IM Roth is the long-distance championship.)

If you aren’t doing it and want to see some very fit individuals wearing spandex, come down. There will even be an expaTRIés banner.

Otherwise, best of luck. See you on the run.

The Paris Triathlon takes places on 30/August in Bois de Boulogne. As it is an Olympic or International distance event, it is great first triathlon for beginners especially as there is a favourable current on the swim which is the discipline most beginners dread. Otherwise, the bike is the standard 40 KM* and followed by a 10 KM run. The top athletes will finish in slightly less than 2 hours but most amateurs hope to finish in less than 3 hours thus a more manageable athletic endeavour than a marathon. And, without that pesky wall at Mile 20.

Consequently, many in this group have entered. If you are interested, there are still places available.

Of those who have entered, many have even done a few training rides with expaTRIés, the English speak triathlon club based in Paris. But if this year is too soon, do contact us about preparing for next year as we have training rides/swims/run all year long. Our website is http://www.expatries-triathlon.com.

Since any triathlon can be a little confusing: Where do I put my bike and sneakers? Why do I have two numbers? How do I take off my wetsuit? expaTRIés will be having a briefing, in English, that explains everything that you need or would ever want to know about triathlons. I, Brian, will be leading the briefing. I am the directeur sportif of the club and Paris will be my 34th triathlon which includes 6 Ironman.

The exact details of registration haven’t been made public yet but we are tentatively planning to meet at the Grande Cascade at noon on the 29/August. First, I will explain what to do with your sneakers, bike, etc. and answer all of your remaining questions. If there is interest, we will even ride the course. After riding the course, we will pick up our registration packets and check our bikes.

As such, please bring your bike. It is not necessary but, most likely, you will, regardless, have to check in your bike on Saturday. This is, in fact, standard for most triathlons. Don’t worry, they will be safe as not only will they be secured by the organizers of the race, there will be, trust me, much more expensive bikes to steal. (Speaking of which, has anybody seen a 2003 Trek Madone in US Postal Team colors with non-stickered Hed Alp wheels?)

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

And, don’t forget some ID as well as your license or medial certificate as the organizers may want to see them at registration.

*Last year, the bike leg was only 38 but the standard distance is 40. However, they may be able to extend the bike course 2 KM this year.

On Saturday, we are going to have a beginner ride. We will either ride to Saint Cloud or Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The pace will be moderate with breaks and it is possible to take the RER back to Paris. The full ride will be 30 KM with a couple of hills.

All are welcome for either ride.

As usual, we will be meeting by the phone booth in the parking lot of the Grande Cascade restaurant at 9:30.
